Throwback Thursday: The Snurfer

Throwback Thursday: The Snurfer

October 9, 2014

What’s up everybody! it’s Thursday which means time for a little throwback action! For today’s TBT post we wanted to dip back into the origins of modern snowboarding, a sport that wouldn’t be possible without The Snurfer!

The snow surfer or Snurfer was created in 1965 by Sherman Poppen in Muskegon, Michigan, after watching his daughter go down a hill standing on a sled. What began as a toy grew into popularity and at the 1968 ‘World Snurfing Classic’ a young Jake Burton (of Burton Snowboards) was inspired, leading to the creation of the Snowboard we are more familiar with. From all of the coaches at Evolve Snow Camps we just wanted to pay some respect to the Snurfer and Sherman Poppen, without which we would not have the wonderful sport of snowboarding to share at Evolve Snow Camps and lessons.
